The examples in this help section are based on a Windows 7/Excel 2010 installation. If necessary, information regarding Windows XP is provided.

A typical setup includes an RTSHARE Server machine and one or more RTSHARE Client machines. Click on the links below for information on how to install RTSHARE on server and client machines:

Manual Installation Steps for the RTSHARE Server

During the RTSHARE Server installation, the following takes place if you decide to leave all default options selected:

  1. Vistasource–>RTSHARE is added to the Windows Start menu.
  2. Two firewall exceptions are set:
    • Vistasource RTSHARE (corresponds to rts_share)
    • Vistasource RTSHARE service (corresponds to rtshare)
  3. rtshare gets installed as a service in Windows and automatically started when Windows starts .

If you decide not to keep some or all of the default options during the installation, the following manual actions may be required, depending which option is changed:

Let Setup modify the services file
If you uncheck this default setting on the RTSHARE File Modifications Screen, the required change to the Services file must be done manually for the program to work. In both Windows 7 and Windows XP, the Services file is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. The required steps are dependent on your selections in this dialog. If you choose:

  • Save the required changes to Services. NEW file - After the installation completes, you will need to navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory, back up your original Services file and rename Services.New to Services.
  • Do not make any changes - After the installation completes, you will need to navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory, edit the Services file using any text editor, and add the following line to the bottom of the file:
    rtshare 5494/tcp
NOTE: A blank line must follow this entry, otherwise the connection will fail.

Add an exception for rtshare to the Windows Firewall
If you uncheck this default option on the RTSHARE Server options screen, the exceptions must be manually added to the Windows Firewall. If a virus protection Software is running, consult your virus protection program on how to manage exceptions to the firewall. The firewall exceptions are:

  • Vistasource RTSHARE (corresponds to rts_share)
  • Vistasource RTSHARE service (corresponds to rtshare)

Start rtshare when Windows starts up
If you uncheck this default option on the RTSHARE Server options screen, you need to manually start RTSHARE after logging into the computer. To manually start RTSHARE, click Start →All Programs →Vistasource→RTSHARE. The RTSHARE icon will appear in the taskbar area together with a brief window about the licensing status. By right-clicking on the icon, you can access the RTSHARE Admin window, view logs, stop/start RTSHARE, access the online help and view the RTSHARE About dialog box. If you decide at a later point to have RTSHARE automatically start up when Windows starts up, the easiest way to add RTSHARE to the startup is by re-runnnig the installer:

  • Start the installer. The installer detects that you already have RTW components installed. On the RTW and RTSHARE installation screen, click on Modify. On the Select Features screen, leave the selections the same, click Next and on the RTSHARE Server options screen leave the default 'Start rtshare when Windows starts up' toggled on. Click Next and finish the installation. Next time you reboot, RTSHARE will start when Windows starts and the user logs in.
